Plan to complete projects worth RM10 mln

-

MIRI: Miri City Council ( MCC) is giving its total commitment to ensure the implementation of RM10 million worth of community and tourism projects for the resort city can be completed within this year or the latest by early next year.

Miri Mayor Adam Yii said the completion of these projects is vital to support MCC’s effort to realise 2018 as Visit Miri Year ( VMY) for the city.

“The funding for the development projects was granted the late chief minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem to MCC during the 10th anniversary celebration of Miri City in 2015.

“He wanted MCC to use the funds for tourism projects, city beautification projects and upgrading public amenities to boost Miri’s potential as a resort city,” he said after chairing a full council meeting at MCC’s chamber meeting room on Monday.

Yii said the six community and tourism projects approved are Green Community Hub, Miri Waterfront and Jetty, upgrading of Miri Handicraft Centre, construction of a waterfront at Kampung Pengkalan Lutong, a tourism forum, and MCC’s Apps and Information Communication Technology ( ICT) project.

The council has completed the RM500,000 waterfront project at Kampung Pengkalan Lutong.

He said the council has requested for additional funding of RM200,000 from Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin for extension of the remaining waterfront at Lutong, including for the installation safety railings, street lighting, and benches, and landscaping.

Yii said the RM50,000 tourism forum had been conducted on April 24 at Eastwood Valley Golf and Country Club ( EVGCC).

A total of 122 participants from relevant tourism industries attended the forum and the council plans to conduct the second series of the tourism forum in August this year.

Concerning MCC’s Apps & ICT project, he said the enhancement of the smart phone application project which costs around RM300,000 is at the updating information stage.

“We will do some enhancements on the Apps’ Mandarin version to cater for the China tourist market.”

He said the first phase of the RM2 million upgrade of Miri Handicraft Centre was completed on May 18 this year and would be handed over to the council in the middle of June this year.

The upgrading of the project is expected to be completed this year with the last construction work centred on the public toilet.

Another project which is scheduled to be completed by this year is the construction of the RM1.5 million Green Community Hub which will be developed behind Yakin Commercial Centre.

Construction of the project will commence in June this year and will see the area turned into a landscaped park for Yakin, Krokop and Pelita residents. It will feature a jogging track, jungle gym, exercise lawn, children’s playground, biking hub, green/ renewable energy education and awareness hub, a weekend flea market and an amphitheatre for arts and culture activities.
