Exponents perform beyond club’s expectatio­ns

SIBU: Rejang Taekwondo Club ( RTC) hit a mi lestone when their exponents returned with nine gold, nine si lver and seven bronze medals from last weekend’s Sarawak Taekwondo Championsh­ip held in Kuching.

Chief coach Thomas Tang described the results as beyond expect ations at the recent appreciati­on dinner.

“We sent 32 exponents, and 25 returned with at least a medal. This is great,” he said.

Over 5 0 0 athlet e s f rom 19 af f i liates of the Sarawak Taekwondo Associatio­n ( STA) took part in the championsh­ip.

RTC only entered for poomsae while skipping the free sparring events.

The gold medallists were the three Yew sisters - Tiffany, Erica and Rachel - Sydney Yew, Jee Jia Jia, Kong Jia Shuen, Wong Si Xiang, Crystal Lee and Wan Ning.

The silver medal lists were Maria Crostarosa, Victor Kong, Russell Kong, Annie Pau, Tommy Pian, Wong Sing Ee, Mohd Asraf, Justin Ong and Sylvester Ling.

Winning bronzes were Austin Robin, Jeremiah Kevin Tang, Christie Julia, Alvin Lau, Terry Pian, Britney Hii and Nathaniel.

Tang revealed that the gold medallists have been shortliste­d for the Borneo Internatio­nal Taekwondo Championsh­ip to be held in Kuching on July 15 and 16.

Thirteen countries including Vietnam, the Phi l ippines , Indonesia, Cambodia, Australia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Brunei and Singapore are expected to take part.

Meanwhile, Tang handed out cash incentives to the winners at the dinner.

Gold medallists received RM50, silver medallists RM30 and bronze medallists RM20 each.
