Freshmen to embrace new role as undergraduates — Vice chancellor
KOTA SAMARAHAN: Freshmen at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak ( Unimas) must embrace their new role as undergraduates in order to become all-rounded, law-abiding students.
Unimas vice chancellor Professor Dato Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi said studying at the university’s Centre for PreUniversity Studies ( PPPU) is not just about examinations, but also exposure to leadership, entrepreneurship, and connecting with society through communitybased programs.
“One of the programs organised by PPPU called ‘Asasi Open Day’, held last Mar 25, received great response from students, teachers as well as parents,” he said while addressing about 730 new students for the Unimas Foundation Studies in Science during an oathtaking ceremony yesterday.
The freshmen were among the ones selected for the year-long Fundamental Life Science and Fundamental Physical Science programmes, after which they will be absorbed into various Bachelor’s Degree programmes in Unimas.
He also reminded the new students to always follow the rules set out by the university.
“We want students to adhere to the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 and all the laws in the country. This is to ensure the discipline and the good name of Unimas is protected,” he added.
After speaking with the foundation students last Saturday, Dr Mohamad Kadim shared that most of the Fundamental Life Science students were aiming to study medicine.
“I’m not trying to discourage you, but the competition to enrol as a medical student even here at Unimas is very fierce. You must study really hard as we will not accept less than 4.0 CGPA for that course.”
He advised the students to keep an open mind in choosing their Bachelor’s Degree courses.
Also present at the ceremony were deputy vice chancellors Professor Mohd Fadzil Abdul Rahman, Professor Dr Kopli Bujang, Professor Dr Wan Hashim Wan Ibrahim and other invited guests.
