Let children’s creativity be free at ‘Castles in the Air’ programme

-

KUCHING: With a new and refreshing emphasis on a wellrounded and holistic experience for the children of Kuching, many workshopsandclasseson creativity have popped up, especially during the school holidays.

‘Castles in the Air’, scheduled for this Friday (June 9) afternoon, is one such brainchild to keep your children’s brains bubbling with ideas during this school holiday.

The organisers of ‘Castles in the Air’ emphasised that it is neither an art class nor tuition, but simply a time for children to express themselves freely through the evergreen media of art and writing.

“The aim is to create a fun, relaxing workshop for children to let loose their creativity and create paintings and writings without the constraints and demands of exam requirements,” said Angelina Bong, one of the facilitators of the workshop.

Bong is a poet, writer and visual artist with a background in fashion. Her paintings and poetry have taken her across the globe.

Speaking to The Borneo Post about ‘Castles in the Air’, she noted that there is a growing number of parents who do not want their children to just score As, but to also discover their imaginative side and develop their creative skills.

“There are more parents now who want their kids to think outside the box,” she said on the proliferation of non- academic skill classes here.

Bong will be teaming up with Poh Sze- Lyn, a teacher trainer and founder of the ‘ Little Story Club’. The holiday workshop will be hosted by IKA Picture Story House, who helped elevate the Chinese children literature scene across the city.

The target audience is children aged seven to 12, who will spend between 1pm to 5pm being guided through some paintings based on the theme, followed by a creative writing session based on their own artwork.

“The workshop will then conclude with a mini exhibition, where each little artist will have the opportunity to present their work to a small audience,” said Bong, adding that this would be a good moment for the children to show to their parents what they have accomplished.

Space is limited to only 10 children. For more information, contact Sze-Lyn at 019- 8881948.
