Hope Place holds learning visits with MRC Miri

-

KUCHING: Hope Place Kuching ( Hope Place) founder Kelvin Wan and manager Heidi Law visited three sites here last week with the Miri Malaysian Red Crescent ( MRC) to learn from MRC how to carry out charity works using different methods.

At the Sunflower Centre (a centre for the disabled), the visitors learned about how MRC Miri created job opportunities for the disabled to earn their own income. The jobs are packing chilli and tomato sauces for fast food chain KFC and doing laundry for a few hotels.

The second place visited was a recycling centre. Second-hand goods donated by the public are used to raise funds to carry out charity work. The donated items include clothing, kitchenware, stationery, toys, shoes, bedding, electrical items, cabinets and sofas.

The third visit was to the MRC Miri Dialysis Centre. The centre has three shifts to serve patients.

Hope Place is a non- governmental organisation ( NGO) that visits poor and less- fortunate families to contribute essential food items like rice, cooking oil, sugar, salt, biscuits, and noodles. Many of these families or individuals barely earn enough to get through the month and are grateful with the assistance provided by these basic necessities delivered to them.

For the families of children with special needs, or with elderly people, the NGO provides milk powder, oats, and diapers as well.

Hope Place carries out aid deliveries once every two months because of the many families on their recipients list. Currently there are more than 170 families on the list.

For more information, call Hope Place at 013- 5672775 or 082- 683378 from 8.30am-12 noon and 2pm- 5pm, Mondays to Fridays; and 9am-12 noon on Saturdays.
