-

SIBU: The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) and Sibu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry will organise Sibu Lantern and Food Fair Festival in conjunction with Visit Sibu Year ( VSY) 2017.

Organising committee spokesman Richard Wong Ei Sing said the festival would span over 24 days beginning October 3, from 5pm to 11pm.

He said the lantern festival would be sited at Sibu town square Phase 1 while the One Malaysia Food Fair will be at Phase 2 of the square.

Wong said a lantern-making contest will also be held simultaneously, and is open to all government departments, companies, associations, schools and religious bodies.

The contest, he pointed out, corresponds with VSY 2017 and serves to warm-up and enhance the atmosphere of the mid-autumn festival.

“The contest is divided into two categories; Group A for government department/company/association, and Group B for school/religion bodies. Cash prizes are on offer to the top four winners of each category,” he said.

For Group A, the champion will receive RM5,000 while second, third and fourth place winners will respectively receive RM2,500, RM1,500 and RM1,000.

For Group B, the champion will take home RM3,500, followed by RM2,000 for second, RM1,000 for third and RM500 for fourth. All winners will also receive certificates from the organiser. Wong said participants are recommended to use environmentfriendly and recyclable materials for their lanterns, which should be lit using batteries or candles.

“There is no rain protection equipment provided by the organiser while the lantern is on display. Therefore, the materials used should be strong, not easily broken and also waterproof.”

Registration for the contest can be made at Sibu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry by calling 084-326959 or 084- 317831, or via fax at 084- 325112.

The closing date for registration is Aug 30.
