Appointments in medical field rather unique – Ali

-

KUALA LUMPUR: The issue of a waiver of the requirement for a pass in the Bahasa Melayu ( BM) subject at the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia ( SPM) -level for appointment on contract basis of Grade UD41 medical officers in the Health Ministry is different from permanent hiring, said Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa.

He said this waiver was a different thing because hiring on contract basis in the medical sector was unique and included bringing doctors from abroad.

“The medical field is different... when one graduates in the medical field, they have to serve as a houseman for two years first, which is not a permanent position.

“For a permanent position, they must meet all criteria required, among them undergoing housemanship for two years and a pass in BM at the SPM level,” he told reporters after visiting the ‘ Diplomasi @ 60: Then and Now’ exhibition here yesterday.

He added that he was waiting for clarification on the issue by the Public Service Department which will be made at the Cabinet meeting today.

On Monday, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had urged Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Joseph Entulu Belaun, representing PSD, to explain to the Cabinet today on the relaxation of the SPM BM pass requirement for hiring medical graduates on contract basis under Grade UD41.

Following that, Dr Subramaniam said his ministry would provide a detailed explanation on the matter to prevent any confusion.

The relaxing of the requirement was made to ease hiring of medical officers, who did not sit for the subject in the SPM, on a contract basis. — Bernama
