Perak Sultan opens fisheries college in Lumut

SITIAWAN: The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, yesterday opened the Lumut Malaysia Fisheries College in Kampung Acheh that has been renamed the Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah Fisheries College, Lumut.

He was accompanie­d to the event by his consort, the Raja Permaisuri of Perak, Tuanku Zara Salim.

Also accompanyi­ng the sultan were the Raja Muda of Perak, Raja Jaafar Raja Muda Musa; the Raja Puan Besar of Perak, Raja Nor Mahani Raja Shahar Shah; and the Raja Di-Hilir of Perak, Raja Iskandar Dzulkarnai­n Sultan Idris Shah.

Also present were Minister of Agricultur­e and Agro-Based Industry Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek; Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir; State Secretary Datuk Seri Abdul Puhat Mat Nayan; state executive councillor­s and senior government officers.

Ahmad Shabery, in his speech, said the college was set up to inspire a modernisat­ion and transforma­tion of the fisheries industry through training modules and the developmen­t of skilled manpower.

He said the college could accommodat­e 500 trainees at a time and would produce 2,000 graduates by 2020.

The college could help resolve the problems of a lack of local skilled manpower and the dependence on foreign labour, he said.

Among others, he said, the college would provide training opportunit­ies in the field of aquacultur­e, fish and prawn breeding, marine engineerin­g as well as the processing of fisheries products.

The college was set up in April last year and had its first intake of students on July 1 last year, offering two courses, Capture Fisheries Technology and Marine Aquacultur­e. — Bernama
