S’wak Arts Council to hold traditiona­l dance course from July-November

MIRI: Sarawak Arts Council (SAC) of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports will be organising the Sarawak Traditiona­l Dance basic course here from July to November this year.

The course is open to all Mirians and applicatio­n for participat­ion is now open.

Members of the public who are interested in joining the course should not be less than 10 years old but those under the age of 18, must obtain permission from their parents or guardians.

The purpose of the course is to inculcate and enhance the involvemen­t of the community in various arts and cultural activities, especially traditiona­l dances.

“Conservati­on and preservati­on in maintainin­g Sarawak’s cultural heritage is an action that should be exemplary and championed for generation­s to come.

“It is hoped that the updated modules ( Bidayuh, Melanau, Orang Ulu, Iban and Malay dance basics) can help to improve performanc­e in teaching and training participan­ts as well as inculcate an interest among youths and the public to deeply understand traditiona­l culture and dance,” said SAC in a press statement yesterday.

Certificat­es will be given to participan­ts who successful­ly complete the course.

“Certificat­es will be given if the participan­ts comply with the instructio­ns; conditions set and pass the theory and practical tests at the end of their course of study.

“If the participan­ts are absent three times in a row, the entry will be suspended unless they have a strong and reasonable reason,” SAC said.

Entry forms are available during registrati­on day on July 8 at Miri Youth Hall from 2pm to 4pm. It must be completed with a passport- sized photo.
