KUCHING: The first International Conference on Computer and Drone Applications ( IConDA) will be held here from November 9 to 11.

Organised by Universiti Teknologi Mara ( UiTM) Sarawak in collaboration with the state government, the inaugural event will provide an exceptional value platform for sharing and networking among scientists, academicians, policy makers and stakeholders from government institutions, universities, non- governmental organisations ( NGOs) as well as industries and private sector on advancement in computer and drone applications.

“We are responding to the state government’s call for us to go digital and this is one avenue where we can explore drone application in many possibilities from agriculture to safety and even marketing.

“This is something interesting which Sarawak and Malaysia can explore on what other countries are doing so we can do some catching up and benefit from technology,” said UiTM Sarawak rector Prof Datuk Dr Jamil Hamali after paying Education, Science and Technological Research Minister Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong a courtesy call at his office in Baitulmakmur Building here yesterday.

The visit was to invite Manyin to deliver his keynote address at the upcoming conference.

On the venue of the conference, Jamil said they were currently waiting for approval due to some areas in Kuching being a no- fly zone.

“We want to do it at a place where we can fly the drone but certain hotels here are no-fly zone areas for drones.

“At the moment, we are still waiting for approval but most likely it will be held at Damai ( Santubong). Otherwise, if we don’t get the approval, the conference will be held at Riverside Majestic.”

Around 100 participants are expected to attend the three- day conference where four keynote speakers; namely National University of Singapore Control, Intelligent Systems & Robotics Area director Prof Ben M Chen; University of Adelaide Unmanned Research Aircraft Facility director Prof Lian Pin Koh; Land and Survey Department deputy director (Operation) Kueh Hui Urg and UiTM Faculty of Architecture, Planning and Surveying senior lecturer Dr Khairul Nizam Tahar will be presenting their papers.
