Andrew Wong to join prominent young leaders at global event in China

KUCHING: Dato Andrew Wong Kee Yew is among the 350 prominent young leaders from across the globe expected to take part in the ‘ Discovery Trip to China for Eminent Young Overseas Chinese 2017’ from July 8 to 14.

The former deputy chairman of Sibu Municipal Council will join delegates from other countries who excel in the fields of economy, science and technology, social and cultural activities and others during the event, said a media statement yesterday.

It was understood that China’s consul- general in Kuching Fu Jijun recommende­d Wong as a delegate for the global event.

Wong, who founded United College Sarawak and played a pivotal role in the establishm­ent of Kolej Laila Taib, University College of Technology Sarawak and Sarawak Maritime Academy - all in Sibu- had also earned himself the Junior Chamber Internatio­nal (JCI) Ten Oustanding Young Malaysians 2016 (Academic Leadership and Accomplish­ment) award.

The week-long event, themed ‘ Building Dreams for the Youth’, is jointly organised by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China and China Overseas Exchange Associatio­n.

It is supported by the Beijing Municipal Government, Jiangsu Provincial Government, Shandong Provincial Government and Henan Provincial Government.

Delegates will be on tour visits to Beijing, Jiangsu, Shandong and Henan on July 9 and 10.

They are expected to attend the opening ceremony to take place at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, followed by a forum ‘ Eminent Young Overseas Chinese’ at Beijing Shangri-La Hotel on July 12.

Director of Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China Qiu Yuanping is expected to deliver her keynote address at the opening ceremony.

On July 13, delegates will attend seminars on Chinese history and culture, Chinese diplomatic relations and One Belt One Road initiative.
