SIBU: Teachers need to be more open to ways of educating students in this digital era, especially in inculcating creative thinking and innovation within the classroom.

Tung Hua School Board of Management chairman Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau said this is because not all students are the same and not all of them take the same learning approach.

“We should not pigeon-hole students based solely on their academic results.

“Instead teachers should be creative and provide many paths for students to grow and develop,” he said when officiating at SMK and SJKC Tung Hua Teacher’s Appreciation Dinner held here on Wednesday.

Lau, who is also chairman of the United Chinese School Committees Association of Malaysia ( Dong Zhong), said teaching is hard work and at times, some teachers think they are expected to achieve unattainable goals with inadequate tools.

“But for all the challenges, I am positive that all teachers will step up to them,” he said.

He hoped teachers will continue to display a high level of commitment towards the duties and responsibilities entrusted to them while they continuously develop and upgrade themselves professionally and personally to keep up with the pace of change and to take up challenges.

Earlier, Lau said flourishing national development and a society truly prosperous with knowledge begin from teachers.

Just as a country is as good as its people, so its people are only as good as their teachers, he said.

“Therefore a great deal depends on you and I salute all of you teachers who are here today, and many others who are not here, for your passion, dedication, commitment and contributions.

“Thank you for making a difference to our nation and to the future of our country,” he said.

Also present at the function were Sibu district education officer Wong Chong Kung, SMK Tung Hua principal Ling Chai Ping, SJKC Tung Hua headmistress Yu Siong Chiu, Parent-Teacher Association chairman Wong Chin Diak and Tung Hua School ExStudents Association president Teresa Wong.
