Stage set for 3rd CMS Borneo Junior Open
KUCHING: The stage is all set for the 3rd CMS Borneo Junior Open Squash Championship which will be held at the Sarawak Squash Centre in Petra Jaya from today until July 11.
Over 200 young players from 10 countries are vying for top honours in the event organised by the Squash Racquet Association of Sarawak (SRAS) with the support from Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports through the Sarawak Sports Corporation and the Sarawak State Sports Council.
The event is sponsored by Cahya Mata Sarawak Berhad (CMSB) for the third consecutive year and had attracted players aged from below 11 to 19 from Australia, Egypt, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Thai land, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Singapore and host Malaysia.
Mal aysi a i s represented by player s f rom Wi layah Persekutuan, Selangor, Kedah, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, Penang, Terengganu, Sabah and Sarawak.
The event is divided into the various categories namely Boys/ Girls Under-11 Open, Boys/Girls Under-13 Open, Boys/Girls Under15 Open, Boys/Girls Under-17 Open and Boys/Girls Under-19 Open.
The format of the championship is based on main rounds in which the top 16 matches will be played to best of five games with the scoring is 11 points ( Point-ARally) following the WSF Rules of World Singles Game.
Depending on the number of entries, SRAS will decide on either to apply knock- out system or circuit format.
Or g a n i s i n g c ommi tt e e chairman Emmanuel David said the response towards this year’s event is encouraging with many participants from overseas.
He said the players had already arrived in Kuching since yesterday and they would start playing today.
The organising committee led by Emmanuel paid courtesy visit to the office of CMSB group managing director Dato Richard Curtis at Wisma Mahmud in Jalan Petanak recently.
Through the kind support and sponsorship from CMSB, the company had contributed a total of RM253,328 for the past seven years through the Sarawak Squash Junior Development Programme which has the primary objectives of providing a good avenue for young players to engage in healthy activities especially in squash.
Members of the public are invited to watch the matches as entrance is free.
