Songs acknowledge decision was ‘abrupt’
Actors Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo, co-stars of the hit series Descendants of the Sun, have both acknowledged their decision to marry on Oct 31 was “abrupt”.
Previously, both had steadfastly claimed that the relationship was merely platonic.
“I knew he was the one,” Hyekyo said.
In separate statements, translated by several news outlets, the Songs also touched on how the romance had started, and expressed excitement over starting a “new life” as a married couple.
In a lengthy statement to fans, Joong-ki wrote in part: “At the start of 2016, we promised to spend the rest of our lives together by understanding each others’ weaknesses and helping each other through harsh times. So I will be starting a new life with Miss Song Hye Kyo through our wedding on the last day of October 2017.”
Explaining their nondisclosure of the romance until this week, he said: “Furthermore, there were many parties involved in the making of the movie and many were looking forward to the release date of this move. Because all these factors, I was worried about the possible harm that might come to this project and if I showed a less-understanding self, I apologise.
“The thoughts that came to me when I first started acting come to mind. As an actor lives, he mustn’t focus on the highs and strive to keep going up. He must learn to look around him and learn to grow wider as a person. I want to work towards being a celebrity that isn’t up in a pedestal but rather around his close fans and people who treasure him. I want to be in reach of the people that care about me. That’s the mindset I had when I first started acting.”
Joong-ki also echoed an earlier statement by his publicists on why the romance had been concealed. He wanted to be very “cautious” and to respect his family’s opinions.

“I was careful not to cause any harm to the production team which did their utmost to make a successful film on the set,” he said.
On Wednesday, Hye-kyo left a note on her fan page, asking for kind understanding from fans.
“Joong-ki’s trust and faith in me for a long time convinced me that it would be good to spend the future together with him. And I was grateful for his sincerity and true heart, which made me have a faith in him in return,” she said.
Last month, MBC TV reported that the couple recently vacationed together in Bali. Their publicists acknowledged that the Songs had gone to Bali but denied that they had travelled together.
“It’s a personal issue so we never asked first, but Song Joong-ki had a serious discussion with us about a month ago, and that’s when we started deliberating when to make the announcement,” Kim Jung-yong of Blossom Entertainment said.
