KUCHING: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak ( Unimas) is set to collaborate with community leaders in Satok constituency in a service learning project through a memorandum of understanding ( MoU).

It is learnt that the project will also cover other aspects such as culture and heritage, youth development, as well as training and research.

The signing of the MoU was held during a Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri event at the Satok Community Sports Complex here Saturday night, where Unimas was represented by its deputy vice- chancellor ( Research and Innovation) Prof Dr Kopli Bujang, while the Satok community leaders were represented by Pemanca Rosli Sahari.

The ceremony was witnessed by Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg, who is Satok assemblyman.

In his remarks, Abang Johari said he was delighted to see the setting-up of such collaboration.

“I believe that this (collaboration) would enable that the community in Satok to have better access to information,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Aidilfitri gathering was organised by the neighbourhood watch committees ( KRTs) from across Satok constituency.

According to state National Unity and Integration Department (JPNIN) director Dirwana Azool, up to June this year, the department recorded 980 KRTs throughout Sarawak – 205 of which are in this city alone.

“Kuching has the highest number of KRTs in Sarawak to date. Way back in 1993, there were only 18 KRTs in Kuching and 38 in the whole of Sarawak,” said Dirwana, who was among the guests at the event.
