St John Ambulance members urged to be models of integrity

-

KUCHING: Members and officers of St John Ambulance Sarawak have been urged to become models of integrity by having high moral and ethical values.

St John Ambulance Sarawak chairman and commander Dato Sri Ang Lai Soon said members of the organisation are recognised as reputable members of society because of the important roles they played.

He added that those values and standards should be emulated into every aspect of society be it at the family level, as an employee, an employer, a follower or a leader.

“I sometimes wonder if enough is done in our educational system to inculcate these good timehonoured values in our students. Maybe it is the over dramatisation of isolated examples of the darker aspects of our society and others by the social media that makes one think that personal integrity is often lacking,” said Ang at the closing of a ‘ First Aid and Nursing Competition’ held at St John Ambulance headquarters here yesterday.

Ang reminded that all officers and members of the organisation have to bear in mind that ‘respect’ and ‘ trust’ must be earned.

“It is not earned through instilling fear or threats. If you are not a person who can be trusted in life, in words and deeds then I think you might find it difficult to be accepted by people in society. No decent doors would remain open for you forever,” he added.

According to him, a person can earn the respect of their peers and society by being honest, trustworthy, courteous, reasonable, considerate, responsible, fair and honourable, as well as by possessing integrity and good principles.

The competition’s organising chairman Dr Shehab Phung Chee Wei, who also spoke, said the objective of the event was to increase the standard of first aid skills among their members.

“It is also to equip the members to face real emergency scenarios,” said Phung.
