KTDTHB received its first batch of students in 1957, under the Colombo Assistance Scheme as a government secondary boarding school for rural students.

At that time, the school was known as Tanjong Lobang School. It was declared open in 1959 by the High Commissioner of New Zealand RL Hutchens.

The school was also the first government school here.
