KUCHING: Heads of government departments and agencies have been advised to form Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Committee in their respective work place.

Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Service (Cuepacs) president Datuk Azih Muda said this is in line with the Occupational Safety and Health Act and has been implemented in the private sector.

“It brings a clear message that managing the safety and health of employees at the workplace is important. With the formation of the committee, it will provide comfort to the employees,” he told a press conference after launching a one- day Public Sector OSH Workshop organised by the OSH Department here yesterday.

Realising the importance of the formation of the committee, Azih hoped the OSH Department would conduct more audits in identifying weaknesses in each government department and agency.

“For example, in the Education Department, it has a lab and chemicals but we are not sure if it is managed well or not. If there is a mishap during working hours, we want the committee formed to play the role of managing

“Aside from taking care of the workers’ welfare in terms of finance, we also take care of their welfare in terms of health and safety, especially in their workplace.” Azih also commended the department for organising the workshop, saying it would help increase the awareness among public servants on the risk, danger and incidents they faced while at work.

OSH Department Sarawak technical service deputy director Arahman Jamel, Cuepacs Sarawak chairman Ahmad Malie and Cuepacs Sarawak secretarygeneral Omar Bahrein Unin were among those present.
