Hold more activities to produce more leaders, Saberkas branches told

KUCHING: Sarawak United National Youth Organisation ( Saberkas) branches in the state are urged to hold more programmes to produce more future leaders.

Its secretary-general Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said that Saberkas champions the youths and equips them with leadership skills.

“However, due to changing times and a borderless world, youths are getting less and less keen to join youth organisations like Saberkas. So I urge the 82 branches to think of programmes that youths are interested in and are beneficial for them,” he said at the Saberkas Pantai Damai branch Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration on Sunday.

Dr Abdul Rahman, who is also Pantai Damai assemblyman and Assistant Minister of Rural Electricity, said that Saberkas is a unique youth organisation in that it does not have an age limit for members.

Saberkas membership is also permanent, unlike other youth organisations which have a specific age limit with one’s membership expiring upon reaching that age.

However, due to lack of interest in youths to join Saberkas during the late 90’s, a large-scale amendment to their membership policy was made, allowing for at least 70 per cent of members to be those aged 40 and below.

“After this amendment, more youths came to join Saberkas and showcase their leadership skills. Now we have many youths at unitlevel who have the potential to be future leaders,” he said.

Aside from that, Saberkas Pantai Damai and Kota Sentosa branches will be holding a joint event, a Charity and Mini Expo Programme, on July 28– 30 at Mydin Samariang.
