MIRI: Twenty outstanding students here received education incentives from the Miri Melanau Association ( PMM) recently.

The recipients, who are children of association members, scored in their Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah ( UPSR), Form 3 Assessment ( PT3), Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia ( SPM), Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) as well as in examinations conducted at colleges and universities.

According to PMM deputy president Councillor Abdullah Jaini, the key objectives of the annual presentation of incentives are to instil the love for learning in these children and also to encourage them to strive further.

“Year after year, we see many brilliant children who achieve outstanding achievements in UPSR, PMR, SPM, STPM and university examinations.

“The incentives serve to motivate them to do better,” he said at the ‘Majlis Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri’ hosted by the association at Wisma Melanau near Jalan Kipas here yesterday.

There was also a presentation of donations to 20 widows – courtesy of CIMB Bank through the banking group’s key corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative ‘CIMB Community Link’.

Meanwhile, Abdullah said PMM plans to hold more programmes aimed at encouraging more youths to venture into business.

“Hence, we appeal to all Melanaus in Miri, especially the youths, to become PMM members. We want the membership number to increase from time to time,” he added.

On another matter, Abdullah Jaini said PMM would provide relief aid to the family at Lorong Mulia 3A in Kampung Tudan Phase 2 here, whose house was destroyed by fi re on Saturday afternoon.

Later Sibuti MP Ahmad Lai Bujang, who is also PMM advisor, announced a RM10,000 grant for the association to run its future activities, especially those meant for charity.

Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin, Kabong assemblyman Mohd Chee Kadir, Miri City Council (MCC) acting secretary Morshidi Frederick and PMM president Datuk Alexander Maiyor were among those present at the Aidilfitri gathering.
