-

SEREMBAN: The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry ( NRE) hopes the working paper on a proposal to create a syllabus on the subject of the environment for schools can be completed by year end.

Its Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said NRE and the Ministry of Education had agreed to incorporate a syllabus on the environment at school level.

“Currently, it has not been ascertained whether the syllabus on environment will be put under a science or social subject because it contains both the elements.

“To date, the agreement by both ministries is at the technical level and if the proposal paper can be completed by the end of the year, the matter can be tabled in Parliament next year,” he said.

He told this to reporters after launching the Environmental Preservation and Innovation Centre ( EPIC) at Pusat Kualiti Alam near here yesterday.

Also present were his deputy Datuk Dr Hamim Samuri, State Public Utilities, Environment, Cooperatives and Consumerism Committee chairman Datuk Abu Ubaidah Redza and Cenviro Sdn Bhd managing director Khalid Bahsoon.

Wan Junaidi said the syllabus on the environment was crucial for early education in moulding Malaysian society, especially the younger generation on the importance of loving, safeguarding and conserving the environment.

Meanwhile, in his speech Wan Junaidi said EPIC, Malaysia’s first centre of excellence for waste management, aimed to become a national excellence centre for developing knowledge and providing innovative solutions for the complete spectrum of sustainable environment and renewable energy. — Bernama
