MIRI: Three local reporters were injured along with their driver when the four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle they were travelling in plunged down a steep ravine at KM10 in Ulu Baram yesterday afternoon.

The three – Lee Cheng Choi of See Hua Daily News, Liong Chai Ling ( Utusan Sarawak) and Ivy Ching ( Sin Chew Daily) – were among five media personnel making the trip to Bario yesterday to cover the 12th Pesta Nukenen which kicks off tomorrow (July 28).

The two other reporters on the trip, Jude Toyat ( The Borneo Post) and Mohd Aliff Idzwan Abdullah ( Utusan Borneo), were in a separate car.

It was said that the trio’s driver was unable to get a clear view of the logging road they were travelling on after a passing lorry sent a thick cloud of dust in the air.

The 4WD then went out of control before overturning about 100 metres down the ravine.

Liong and the driver managed to exit the 4WD on their own, while Ivy and Lee were helped out of the ill-fated vehicle.

All four were lucky to sustain only light injuries and received treatment at the nearby Samling clinic.

Following the incident, the trip to Bario for the three injured reporters was called off, while the rest of the entourage, including Miri Mayor Adam Yii, continued with their journey.

The 12th Pesta Nukenen is expected to be graced by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
