DAP wants councils to publish names, work schedules of contractors

-

MIRI: DAP is giving one month for Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian to comply with his pledge to publish the names of local councils’ contractors and work schedules in order for the public to monitor their services and transparency in their duties.

State DAP secretary Alan Ling Sie Kiong said Dr Sim had several times made statements to publish the contractors’ names and their schedules last year and this year, however, until today, there had been no action taken by the local councils.

“Until today, the contractors’ names and schedules are not available in local councils including Miri City Council ( MCC), “Ling said during a press conference held at DAP Miri headquarters yesterday.

Present were Pujut assemblyman Dr Ting Tiong Choon and a DAP member Peter Hii.

According to Ling on July 13, Dr Sim had directed all local councils to publish the names of contractors and their schedules and tasks but until now there has been no action from the local councils which is in defiance of the minister’s directive.

He said the names and contact numbers of contractors and their schedules are important to be made known to the public so that they would know whether the contractors are doing their jobs such as grass cutting, garbage collections and drain cleaning.

“If nothing happens in one month, DAP will put up a motion through State assemblyman for Pujut Dr Ting Tiong Choon in this November DUN sitting,” he said further.

“For Miri City Council, I hope mayor Adam Yii can set a good example to publish the contractors’ names and telephone numbers and also their schedules and services to the local community and housing areas in Miri.”

On a separate issue, Dr Ting wants the MCC to explain why the Green Community Hub at Taman Yakin in Krokop is turned into parking lots.
