‘Simpsons’ creator developing new series for Netflix
MATT Groening is headed to where original animated series like “BoJack Horseman” and “F Is for Family” already thrive.
The creator of “The Simpsons” and “Futurama” will develop a medieval adult fantasy titled “Disenchantment” for Netfl ix, the streaming service announced on Tuesday.
And yes, like his previous hits, “Disenchantment” will be animated — though this time, with a singular female lead: the young, boozing princess Bean, as voiced by “Broad City’s” Abbi Jacobson. Her sidekicks will be a demon ( Eric Andre) and an elf (Nat Faxon).
“Ultimately, ‘Disenchantment’ will be about life and death, love and sex, and how to keep laughing in a world full of suffering and idiots,” Groening said in Netfl ix’s news release, “despite what the elders and wizards and other jerks tell you.”
Groening isn’t shy when it comes to defending his humour. On Saturday at Comic- Con, he noted during a “Simpsons” panel that parent company 21st Century Fox had asked the long-running series to go easier on Fox News, according to the Hollywood Reporter — before starting a crowd chant of “Lock him up.”
Other “Disenchantment” characters will be voiced by such actors as John DiMaggio, Billy West, Maurice LaMarche, Tress MacNeille, David Herman, Matt Berry and Jeny Batten.
“The series will bear (Groening’s) trademark animation style and biting wit, and we think it’s a perfect fit for our many Netflix animation fans,” Cindy Holland, Netflix’s vice president of original content, said in a statement.
“Disenchantment” will be animated by Rough Draft Studios, which has handled “Futurama,” which Netfl ix already carries.
A 10- episode fi rst season is planned for next year. — WPBloomberg
