SMK Lake students win cooking competitio­n

KUCHING: SMK Lake students Gabriel and Kelly have won the Next Big Chef 2017 after reaching the semi-fi nals last year.

They won an RM40,000 bursary and RM1,000 during the finals last weekend.

Gabriel and Kelly scored 601.2 points out of 900 to beat SMK Pending’s Christophe­r and Christy, who scored 562 points.

“It was a blast! I really love Next Big Chef. I felt like I’m in MasterChef Australia. So nervewrack­ing!” said Gabriel.

In third place were Nichell Ho and Law Fong Leong from SMK DPHA Gapor. The Next Big Chef is hosted by UCSI University. Auditions in schools started in February with more than 300 students from 19 schools participat­ing.

Participan­ts were required to prepare modern Malaysian cuisine. The climax of the competitio­n for the top six finalists involved a three-hour non- stop cook- off challenge.
