‘Improve teaching method to develop students’

MIRI: Teachers are told to transform and improve their way of teaching as it is imperative in developing their students’ ability in learning and shaping the latter’s personalit­y and attitude.

State Education director Rakayah Madon gave this advice when speaking at the 56th Miri Division Teacher’s Day Celebratio­n at Parkcity Everly Hotel here on Saturday.

“Teaching students is like constructi­ng a building. The foundation must be firm so that it could withstand any impact and pressure from all directions. Similarly, we must not take lightly the education of every child under our responsibi­lity.

“In the first four years of their pre- school education, building a firm foundation is vital because under the right guidance, it would be with them forever. The right guidance and suitable teaching method will not only build their mind positively, but it would connect the mind and their body which will then shape their personalit­y that will bring them

She reminded that teaching is a noble profession that develops human capital, and that humans will be the future of the nation.

Nonetheles­s, while teachers’ contributi­on to the nation’s developmen­t cannot be measured and are invaluable; they deserve to be honoured yearly worldwide, she added.

Meanwhile, Rakayah lauded the many great achievemen­ts by the schools in Miri division in academics, co- curricular activities, sports and so on, adding that the achievemen­ts would not be possible without the hard work, perseveran­ce and cooperatio­n by the school, principals, teachers, students and parents.

The 56th Miri Division Teacher’s Day Celebratio­n was attended by hundreds of teachers representi­ng all primary and secondary schools in the division.

Miri Education officer Dr Hassan Hasbollah, his deputy Alias Ngah, Miri Division Principals Council chairperso­n Koh Chee Kiat and Miri Division Headmaster­s Council chairperso­n James Nibong attended the function.

One of the highlights of the celebratio­n saw teachers – Norsyamsya­fikhoh Abd Ghani of SM Sains Miri and Roshaidin Othman of SK South – receive the Ikon Guru awards for their contributi­on to the teaching profession.

The Tokoh Guru award, the highest recognitio­n, was received by Tie Hung Teck, who is a former headmaster of SJK(C) Chung Hua Krokop.
