750 take part in first Wonder Women Run

-

KUCHING: The inaugural Wonder Women Run 2017 yesterday attracted 750 runners and raised over RM30,000 for its three beneficiaries.

Organised by the Sarawak Federation of Women’s Institutes (SFWI), participants were flagged off from the old State Legislative Assembly ( DUN) building at 6.45am.

The theme ‘ Wonder Woman’ was chosen because women are a powerful catalyst in the community, acknowledged for their capability of raising the next generation who are able to face a challenging life in this era of globalisation, said SFWI chairwoman Norjanah Razali.

“The aim of this run is to channel information to the community about the SWFI Care and Share Fund, which aims to help our target groups,” she said in her speech.

The SFWI Care and Share Fund, Pink Ribbon Support Group Association Kuching and Sarawak Breast Cancer Support Group each took home a RM10,000 contribution from SFWI patron Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Raghad Kurdi Taib.

Welfare, Community Well Being, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah said that this event was in line with the government’s emphasis on a healthy lifestyle.

“Beginning 2015, the second Saturday in October is National Sports Day, with the objective of creating a sports culture in the nation,” she said, adding that various programmes are held on that date nationwide.

“This effort will increase awareness and change lifestyles, creating a sports culture in Malaysia and can kickstart (the careers of) more athletes to make us proud.”

Also present was Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

Wonder Women Run 2017 was made possible with the support of the Sarawak government, federal government, Moma Water, Serapi Garden, Sarawak Energy Berhad, Pure Juices, Lea Centre, Merdeka Palace, Grand Margherita Hotel, Normah Specialist Centre, Nestle, Universiti Teknologi Mara ( UiTM) Sarawak, Open Universiti Malaysia, Indocafe, and Revive.
