SMK Muara Tuang students take part in chemistry workshop

KUCHING: A chemistry outreach workshop was held for Form 3, 5 and 6 students of SMK Muara Tuang at the school’s science laboratory recently.

The workshop was conducted by Prof Dave Warren and his team from Otago University of New Zealand.

“The aim of the workshop is to instil and develop in the students the interest in chemistry. This programme is a collaborat­ion between SMK Muara Tuang, Teacher Trainign Institute ( IPG) Batu Lintang Campus and Otago University.

“Many interestin­g activities arebeing carried out in this workshop. Among them are ‘ Magic in Science’, the ‘ PVA Borax hydrogel’, the making of crystals, growing of liquid crystals, liquid crystal display and cyanotypes,” said a statement.

Also present at the workshop were IPG Batu Lintang Science Department head Yahya Sedik and other lecturers.

At the opening of the workshop, Science and Mathematic­s Department head Liew Mui Fah remarked that these activities were in line with science education, stressing on investigat­ion, hands- on and minds- on activities and fun in learning.

“This programme is part of our school STEM ( Science, Technology, Engineerin­g and Mathematic­s) Festival, launched in May 2017. The students were fully immersed in all the activities and enjoyed the whole session very much.

“They had fun and were actively engaged throughout the session. They look forward to joining another similar workshop in the future,” added Liew.
