55 netted during statewide anti-gambling raids

KUCHING: Police arrested 55 individual­s, including 12 women, during anti-gambling raids across the state last week.

State Criminal Investigat­ion Department (CID) chief SAC Datuk Dev Kumar said in a statement yesterday that the suspects aged 18 to 82 were apprehende­d between July 24 and 30 during raids against illegal 4D, cyber gambling, cockfighti­ng and gambling at public places.

Dev Kumar said during the 32 raids in 16 districts, police also confiscate­d RM5,543.

“The 25 illegal 4D raids resulted in the arrests of 30 individual­s and seizure of cash amounting to RM3,254.

“Mobile phones, portable printer, calculator­s, betting slips and stationery were also seized.

“Apart from illegal 4D, three raids were conducted on cyber gambling outlets in Miri, Marudi and Lawas, which resulted in the arrests of five individual­s and seizure of 25 computers and tablets used for cyber gambling and cash amounting to RM2,289,” said Dev Kumar.

During a raid at a cockfighti­ng pit on Saturday, nine gamblers were arrested at Desa Wira in Batu Kawa, while two individual­s were arrested following a raid on a cockfighti­ng pit in Betong.

Various parapherna­lia used for cockfighti­ng, including two live cockerels, were seized.

Dev Kumar said nine persons were arrested for playing the gambling game ‘ holo’ at public places in Sri Aman and Matu Daro.

A total of 16 raids were conducted on public places and five-footways, eight raids on shoplots, six raids on grocery shops, while there were two raids on coffee shops.

All those arrested are being investigat­ed for offences under the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance 1962.
