442 detained over violence, security offences

-

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 442 people have been arrested for offences related to violence and security as of June 30.

According to the Home Ministry, of the total, 310 arrests involved members of the terrorist group Daesh and the remainder involved other terrorist groups.

“Since February 2013, the Royal Malaysian Police ( PDRM) have succeeded in thwarting 15 attempts by the Daesh militant group, which clearly demonstrates the government’s commitment to curb elements of the Daesh terrorist group from growing and threatening security,” the ministry said in a written reply circulated in Perliament yesterday.

It was in reply to the question from Fong Kui Lun ( DAP-Bukit Bintang) who wanted to know the status of Daesh terrorists in the country and its threats in terms of the number of arrests.

In a written reply to a question by Datuk Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah Raja Ahmad ( PAN-Kuala Terengganu) on the measures taken to restrict the entry of Daesh members into the country, the ministry said PDRM had taken several initiatives to address the matter.

“Among the actions taken are to increase security in strategic locations such as tourist centres, foreign interests and important targets throughout the country.

“This security control is made using the concept of the ‘National Blue Ocean Strategy’ which involves the cooperation of national security agencies especially the police and the Malaysian Armed Forces,” he said.

This includes monitoring all major national gateways, whether air, land or sea which are also being upgraded including controls along the national border. — Bernama
