SIBU: Employers have been urged to accept more school leavers with skilled or semiskilled qualifications into their workforce.

Minister of Education, Science and Technological Research Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong said this will go a long way in paving the way for the younger generation to hone industryrelevant skills.

“As the state progresses towards the realisation of various development objectives, industries across the length and breadth of Sarawak play a very important role in human capital development,” he said when officiating at the ‘Industry Engagement Symposium’ held here yesterday.

His text of speech was read out by Assistant Minister of Education and Technological Research Dr Annuar Rapaee.

The one- day symposium themed “Propelling Industry through Strategic Human Capital Development” was organised by Sarawak Skills Development Centre ( PPKS).

Manyin said the state government would champion many initiatives towards economic development with a focus on rural infrastructure development, the digital economy, affordable housing and light rail transit as highlighted by the chief minister.

He said this included the development of various industry sectors such as agriculture, education, tourism and petrochemicals.

“To realise these initiatives, my ministry will identify the relevant issues, challenges, needs and opportunities to formulate a comprehensive plan to improve the education system in Sarawak.

“I must emphasise that in today’s global economy, a nation’s success depends fundamentally on the knowledge, skills, competencies and innovation of its people,” he said.
