MIRI: The final leg of the ninth Go Bald campaign which was held at Parkcity Mall, Bintulu on Sunday (July 30) was a success, with over RM56,000 raised from the annual event.

The turnout at the event organised by Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS) was said to be more than expected.

SCCS president Jocelyn Hee said she was positively overwhelmed with the amount of support shown by the people in Bintulu.

“Last year, we managed to raise over RM26,000 for the campaign in Bintulu. This year saw an increase in the number of ‘shavees’ which doubled the donation. This shows that the awareness of childhood cancer has gradually increased. We are happy for the patients and their family too,” Hee said.

Counting her blessings, she said she was particularly overwhelmed when several individuals came to the event to hand over donations to SCCS.

Among them were Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing who donated RM10,000; Parkcity Mall ( RM5,600) and Bintulu Dancing Troupe which raised and donated RM9,999 to SCCS.

Go Bald campaign is a main event of SCCS that is meant to raise awareness and raise funds for the society. The campaign which encourages participants to go bald shows solidarity to children with cancer that they are not alone in the fight against cancer, and that hair loss is only a temporary setback on the journey to recovery.

With a hefty annual operational cost of approximately RM1.8 million, SCCS needs the Go Bald campaign to raise funds and support from the public to continue to help the patients and their family.

Its services range from emotional support, the running of halfway home in Kuching and Miri for outstation patients receiving treatment at local government hospitals, financial aid, craft- based education and various recreational activities throughout the year.

Hee extended her thanks to all the sponsors in Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu and Miri for their support which made this year’s campaign a success.
