MIRI: Youths are the deciding factor for the future and direction of our state and nation.

In stating this, Assistant Minister of Women, Family and Childhood Development Rosey Yunus said that was why the government gave much attention to early education which served as a foundation for their future learning.

“We want the new generation to get involved in nation building and the young children would also be taught on the spirit of volunteerism and love for the state and country.”

Rosey was speaking at the ‘Program Kommuniti Perihatin Kanak Kanak Terpimpin I’ organised by Miri Welfare Department that was held at Tim Resort, Kampung Beraya Lama, Lambir recently.

According to Rosey, youths must learn as early as childhood of the hardship some people face and the spirit of volunteerism.

“When they are taught these things, including volunteerism, they can experience and see for themselves the real situation on the ground and know how to tackle them,” she said.

Rosey, who is Bekenu assemblywomen, said when youths are given opportunity to get involved in community programmes they would understand what it means to be poor and appreciate their parents, teachers and the government for what they have.

On the painting of a house in Kampung Mumong, Bekenu owned by a poor family, she hoped the participants would learn to have empathy and sympathy for the underprivileged.

Commenting on other issues, she said what was worse was drug abuse among the younger generation in the villages and longhouses.

“It used to be concentrated in the main towns and cities like Kuala Lumpur but now it has reached the rural areas,” she pointed out.

Later, Rosey announced a grant of RM2,000 each to Pusat Aktiviti Kanak-Kanak Permyjaya and Taman Tunku, Miri.
