Schools Tenpin Bowling Programme launched at Megalanes Sarawak
KUCHING: The launching of the Schools Tenpin Bowling Programme 2017-2027 has generates a lot of interest in the sport among school children and teachers at Megalanes Sarawak E-Mart Batu Kawa yesterday.
More than 400 pupils/students from primary and secondary schools here, accompanied by over 100 teachers instructors and parents, filled the biggest bowling centre in Malaysia to the brim.
Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) chief executive officer Dr Ong Kong Swee, who launched the programme, said it was primarily aimed at widening the base of the bowlers at grass roots level.
“Apart from answering our government’s call on the ‘One Student One Sport’ programme in schools, this programme is also to ensure that quality athletes are always prepared for competition every year in the MSSM, Sukma, National and Interstate Championships as well as overseas tournaments,” he said.
Ong said the programme was also vital to ensure that Sarawak stay as the powerhouse in tenpin bowling and that the instructor’s course would ultimately increase the number of quality coaches for Sarawak.
“To make that happen, it is necessary to train the school teachers as bowling instructors, get their students involved and set up bowling clubs in their schools,” he said.
“There is also a need to communicate with the ParentTeacher Associations, create an awareness to all parents and organise bowling competitions,” added Ong.
He also presented the certificates to 58 participants including 48 teachers who attended the teachers bowling instructors course at Megalanes Sarawak last week.
Also present at the launching were Sarawak Education Department Sports Unit head Johnny Rasit, Amateur Tenpin Bowling Association (Abas) deputy president Shaifulbahri Shukri who represented the president Sunny Si, Schools Tenpin Bowling Programme chairman Jackie Ting and programme coordinator Robert Lu who is also Abas vice president.
