BINTULU: Members of the 1Malaysia Community ( K1M) can play the role of community journalists in their areas.

State director of Information Department Abang Sardon Abang Hashim said disseminating information to the public is one of the roles of K1M members with social media as the medium to alert the relevant authorities in an emergency.

Each K1M in Sarawak has a Facebook account.

“The conventional way of writing is not relevant as we have our own style of writing - that is the beauty of social media,” he said during Strategic partnership engagement and outreach programme 2017 conducted in Bintulu yesterday.

Sardon reminded K1M members to check their sources of information for authenticity before sharing.

“If you are confident the news is true, you can share it. Sharing information can shorten the response time taken by the relevant authorities to provide assistance, but be careful in sharing and be obliged to verify the news posted on social media,” he said.

During the event, Sardon welcomed over 100 members of the Merdeka Day convoy.

“This convoy is significant to us; it is meaningful to K1M members as it is an opportunity to wave the Jalur Gemilang,” he said.

Sardon reminded the people that unity is the key to success; the young generation should embrace positive values and be patriotic.

“Let us fly and uphold the Jalur Gemilang, a symbol of our sovereignty. Each and everyone of us has a role to play,” he said.

Six pensioners from the Information Department here were given souvenirs in recognition of their contribution to the organisation. They are Sulaiman Sitam, Medani Selawa, Penghulu Morshidi Tali, Ahmad Mohd Sulla, Suhaili Amran and Kederi Junaidi.
