Centre to develop Iban Literature in the pipeline

KUCHING: The proposed formation of an Iban Language, Culture and Ethnograph­y Centre in the state was discussed at length during a meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah yesterday.

He said the formation of the centre was vital to preserve, conserve, modernise and develop Iban literature and ethnograph­y.

“I give my full support to the formation of such a centre for the Ibans in the state. I hope the formation of the Language, Culture and Ethnograph­y Centre will one day become a reality. We shall work hard to make sure it happens,” he said after the meeting, held at Wisma Bapa Malaysia.

During the meeting, Prof Dr Bromeley Philip from UiTM’s Academy of Language Studies also presented a working paper on the formation of the centre.

University Malaysia Sarawak ( Unimas) dean of Social Sciences Faculty, Associate Professor Dr Neilson Ilan Mersat; Tun Jugah Foundation research director Dr Robert Menua Saleh; Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris senior lecturer for Language Faculty ( Iban) Associate Professor Dr Chemeline Usop; and Sarawak Education Department Iban Language Developmen­t coordinato­r Mariam Sabai were also present.
