‘Overgrown plants, wrongly-placed signboards a hazard to motorists’

-

MIRI: United People’s Party ( UPP) Pujut branch is calling on the relevant authority to trim overgrown plants and re-position some signboards at certain road junctions here.

Its branch chairman Bruce Chai said action was needed to ensure the safety of motorists as the signboards and overgrown plants were a hazard to motorists exiting the junctions.

“These signboards, when placed wrongly, and the overgrown plants, make it difficult for motorists to see oncoming traffic when coming out from the road junction.

“Hopefully, the relevant authority will take immediate action to trim the plants and ensure that these signboards will not endanger motorists,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Chai said UPP Pujut received a number of complaints regarding the safety of the road junction during a ground visit by its mobile action team ( MAT) at Krokop 5 on Saturday.

He added another issue received by the MAT was concerning leachate spillage from garbage trucks during waste collection.

“The leachate spill on the road and near the Pelita Commercial Centre has emitted an unpleasant odour. Luckily, the rain over the past two days has washed away the leachate and left only stains on the affected road.”

“It is hoped that the contractor will take note of this matter and ensure the leachate does not spill from the trucks.”

Chai also thanked the community for giving feedback which helps to alert the relevant authorities, such as Miri City Council ( MCC), on matters which the council may not be aware of.

He pointed out that the aim of the ground visits by UPP Pujut was not to criticise the services provided by relevant authorities, but to offer assistance by helping to address community problems faced by the people.

‘ To some, problems pertaining to grass- cutting, poor garbage collection, and unmaintained drains might be petty matters.

“But to us, these matters are very close to the heart of the people and must be addressed accordingly.”
