BINTULU: The vision of a united and prosperous nation begins with instilling the spirit of unity and willingness to work hard in young children.

In this respect, Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing believes that the young ones need to be taught the value and importance of staying united, which could be done by encouraging them to mingle with people of different faiths, ethnic groups and social backgrounds.

“The spirit of unity goes beyond the family institution – it is also a crucial element for the country,” he said before launching the Jalur Gemilang campaign at the civic centre here yesterday,

which was part of the Unity Week programme by the Department of National Unity and Integration (JPNIN) here.

The ceremony was witnessed by state JPNIN deputy director Esther Dingkawan, JPNIN Bintulu Division officer Diana Seliman and chairman of Consolidation of Neighbourhood Committees ( KRTs) in Bintulu Division, Herman Lanying.

According to Tiong, the people’s love for the country goes beyond chanting patriotic slogans.

“This is a serious matter when you see there is a group of young people who take unity for granted; they think that they can live without other people.

“It took decades to build our country into what it is today. Lack of unity can destroy a nation eventually – take a look at other countries where the people are fighting one another. Such a fate could befall this country if we took (unity) for granted,” he said.

In this regard, Tiong stressed that the onus falls on everybody, especially those in the KRTs, to instil the spirit of unity in today’s younger generation.
