Fishing boat crewman feared drowned during swim at beach

-

SARIKEI: A fishing boat crew member is feared to have drowned while swimming at Kampung Belawai beach, near here on Sunday.

District police chief Supt Mat Jusoh Muhammad said the matter came to light around 9.30pm after a police report was lodged over the disappearance.

“The missing crewman was said to have gone for a swim with a fellow crew member.

“A villager who happened to be in the area noticed the two were having difficulties in the water due to strong tide. He rushed to their aid and managed to save one of them,” said Mat Jusoh, who did not state what time the incident took place.

He added that the victim had only been identified as Luis, a 20something Iban from Kapit.

“The boat skipper said he did not have Luis’ identification document as the victim was not a regular crew member and had only joined them a few days ago.

“In fact, the skipper said it was Luis’ first fishing trip with them” said the OCPD.

A search-and-rescue operation involving the police, Fire and Rescue Department ( Bomba), Civil Defence Force (APM) and Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency ( MMEA) was launched yesterday.

Those with further information on victim’s identity can contact Belawai police station officer-incharge Sergeant Rajuna Sat on 016- 8004305.
