MIRI: Miri City Council ( MCC) decided to adjourn its full council meeting yesterday after two individuals from Democratic Action Party ( DAP) Miri refused to leave the meeting for wearing improper attire.

The two individuals were Pujut assemblyman Dr Ting Tiong Choon and DAP Miri youth chief Peter Hii.

Both of them attended the meeting, which was supposed to start at around 11.30am at the council’s meeting room, as observers.

Before the meeting started, mayor Adam Yii as the chairman of the monthly meeting requested Dr Ting and Hii to leave the meeting for failing to adhere to the meeting’s code of attire.

He told them that MCC had endorsed a policy during the last full council meeting on the need for the councillors to wear proper attire at any council meeting.

According to the code of attire, it is compulsory for the councillors to wear smart attire or the council’s corporate uniform when attending the meetings.

Apart from t- shirt and jeans, attires that bear the logo of any political party are also not allowed during the meetings.

This policy also applies to members of the public who wish to attend the full council meeting as observers and members of the media who come for news coverage.

Yii further said that a media statement on the matter had been released soon after the proposal on code of attire for meetings was tabled during the last full council meeting and agreed to by all councillors attending the meeting.

Although Dr Ting attended the meeting in smart attire, his shirt bore the DAP logo while Hii came in the party’s t-shirt.

Yii then made the final decision at around 12noon to adjourn the October full council meeting until further notice because the duo refused to leave the meeting room.

The decision was supported by all the councillors, who also demanded the duo to respect the process of the full council meeting.

Also present was deputy mayor councillor Julaihi Mohamad.

Meanwhile, at around 4pm yesterday, MCC informed the media that the full council meeting would be held at 2pm today.
