Pupils have fun at informative Nature Awareness Workshop
MIRI: Nearly 200 pupils of SK Miri had an informative and fun morning at the Nature Awareness Workshop held at the school’s seminar room recently.
The first slot of the threehour talk was kicked off by chairman of Malaysian Nature Society ( MNS) Miri Branch, Iqbal Abdollah sharing an environmentalist’s view on the importance of protecting Mother Nature through photos of polluted and unpolluted beaches, as well as what to do to help nature get back to its feet.
He encouraged the pupils to become nature volunteers, protecting Mother Earth from pollution, starting from small gestures like picking up litter.
The seminar was followed by Miri Health Department officer Anderson Paul Rejie and Joewe Maxwell Galah sharing on dengue fever and prevention. Rosli Nawi from the Department of Environment talked on environmental preservation.
Speaking to The Borneo Post after the seminar, headmaster Sapri Paee said he was happy the students had the chance to participate in the seminar.
“I felt lucky that our school SK Miri was selected for the road tour by Miri Local Agenda 21 ( LA21).
“The contents of the presentation could impact our students as it is not something they can learn from the syllabus. It was a more hands-on experience and sharing by MNS officers disseminating information that impact our daily life.
“More importantly, it could help mould these children to become responsible citizens of the Earth which they will protect in future,” he said.
The pupils of Primary 4, Primary 5 and Primary 6 were interactive during the three-hour talk, a sign that environmental issues had caught their attention.
SK Miri was the final stop for the five schools selected by Miri LA 21 for the Nature Awareness Workshop tour. The other participating schools were SK Sayed Othman, SK Merbau, SK Pulau Melayu, and SK Lutong.
