Santa’s little helpers decorate Christmas cookies

-

MIRI: Twenty-five students of Tenby schools here showed their creative side in a recent charity bake programme during which they decorated and sold Christmas cookies to raise funds for the needy.

Year 9 secondary student Sajeev Depmath and Year 6 primary student Dhara Rahul Naidu were among the participants comprising mostly members of the Student Council.

Also present were leaders of four school houses namely Sharks, Cobras, Lions and Dragons.

“I am super excited to be part of this programme which allows me to break out of my comfort zone. By taking part in this programme, I hope to develop non-academic skills beneficial to me in the future,” Bangladeshi student Sajeev, 13, told The Borneo Post when met during the programme.

As for Rahul, 11, from India, apart from the chance to taste food he had personally prepared, the programme was an opportunity for him to reach out to the needy.

“I am happy to be able to take part in such a meaningful programme that gives me the opportunity to help my school by selling cookies,” said the Sharks house member.

This is the first time Sajeev and Rahul are decorating cookies.

“For any school activities, if I think I can do it, I will participate. Decorating cookies is new to me but I am having fun,” Sajeev said.

The one- day programme was organised by Tenby Schools Miri andPullmanMiriWaterfrontHotel’s chefs baked all the cookies.

“This is an initiative to enable these children to directly perform community service and charitable works outside the school,” said Principal Jeanne Denyer.

Santa’s little helpers had fun decorating hundreds of Christmas cookies at the hotel reception area for about 2 hours from 2pm.

Some of the cookies were sold at RM2 each at the reception area after the students had completed decorating them, while the remaining cookies were brought back to the school to sell.

Denyer revealed that proceeds from the sale of cookies will be donated to the Ten Ringgit Club and The Sunflower Centre here.

“We hope to raise at least RM1,000 to be equally divided between these two bodies we have been supporting for five years with various activities to be organised to raise funds for the needy,” she added.
