i-CATS students hold culinary arts showcase
KUCHING: International College of Advanced Technology Sarawak (i- CATS) Diploma in Culinary Arts semester four students held a culinary arts showcase for fellow students, college staff, and guests recently.
A press release yesterday said the lunch themed ‘Farm-to-Table Dining Experience’ was held at the i- CATS West Campus Restaurant Lab here.
The menu comprised Waldorf Salad, Corn Chowder, Chicken Kiev served with Honey Roasted Carrots and Duchess Potatoes, and Chocolate Brownies Parfait with Salted Caramel Sauce.
The special drink of the day was the Blackcurrant Apple Mocktail.
Students also had to work out the relevant costs in organising the event and ensure that wastage was kept to a minimum.
Among those present were Minister of Education, Science and Technological Research Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong; Sarawak Skills Development Centre (PPKS) chairman and i- CATS president Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Husain; Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Research permanent secretary Datu Sudarsono Osman; PPKS executive director Hallman Sabri; and i-CATS CEO Mohamad Isham Fauzi.
Mohamad Isham said students were quick to appreciate the wide-ranging duties of a culinary professional.
He explained that to excel, they require a harmonious blend of solid culinary and business skills, creative passion, and nutritional knowledge.
Chef Marry Tracy, an i-CATS chef lecturer and event mentor, said the lunch – a compulsory component of the Food and Beverage Operation subject – was an important step to prepare students for a wide range of careers in hotels, resorts, fine- dining establishments, food service operations and more.
She said the students felt a sense of pride as they transformed seemingly ordinary looking ingredients into a range of culinary delights.
