Rh Gawan landslide victims receive food aid

-

KAPIT: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Kapit and Malaysian Red Crescent ( MRC) Kapit Chapter recently donated food aid to landslide victims at Rumah Gawan, Lepong, Baleh.

SUPP Kapit chairman Ling Thiam Ing said during the new committee’s first meeting, a social welfare sub- committee was set up to help the community, particularly during disasters such as landslides, floods, or fi res.

“This is our new approach to reach out to society. We want to make our presence felt. For the past years, we were a bit lagging because then we concentrated on raising funds for the SUPP Kapit branch headquarters. This year, we bought a residential unit for that purpose.

“Now the new committee has decided to go into the community. We want to work closely with the government and the elected representatives because SUPP is one of the BN (Barisan Nasional) component parties. We’ll try our best to help within our financial means,” he said.

Among the food items were rice, cordial drinks, canned food, and noodles.

The landslide damaged four houses at Rumah Gawan.

A total of 36 residents were affected by the incident, which occurred around 2am.

The landslide also caused the access road to flood as the drainage system was blocked by the mud and debris.
