Ouna to hold mass ethnic wedding
KUCHING: The Orang Ulu National Association (Ouna) will hold a mass ethnic wedding ceremony next year.
Ouna president Datuk Dr Abu Bakar Abdullah said the ceremony will be different from other mass marriage events as it will involve couples from different ethnic groups.
“This will be the first of its kind in Sarawak, which we are hoping to set a record in the Malaysia Book of Records as the ‘Biggest Marriage Solemnisation Ceremony of Various Ethnic Groups’ in Malaysia,” he said.
Abu Bakar said the target is 100 couples from various ethnic groups statewide, would be divided into two batches of 50 couples each, with the first batch scheduled to marry next month.
“The couples would be wearing a variety of costumes according to their ethnicities, and they will be walking down the aisle to the warmest applause from most distinguished guests, family and friends.
“We are going to invite Head of State (Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud) as well as the Chief Minister (Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg), and we are also inviting the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak) to close the programme,” he said.
The programme has been approved by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development, and will be held in collaboration with the National Population and Family Board (LPPKN).
