Boy among 44 held in swoop on illegal gambling activities

KUCHING: A boy was among 44 individual­s detained over the past week by police for involvemen­t in illegal gambling activities in the state.

State CID chief Datuk Dev Kumar said the 15-year- old school dropout was found to be operating a shop which provided reload services for online gambling at Moyan commercial centre in Batu Kawah.

“Fourteen raids were conducted in eight districts (in the state) on convenienc­e stores and shops offering online gambling reload services.

“The raids resulted in the arrest of 27 individual­s, including a 15-year- old boy who was found operating an online gambling reload service outlet at Moyan Commercial Centre in Batu Kawa,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Dev Kumar said a further 10 raids were conducted on counters selling illegal lottery across four districts, leading to the arrest of 10 individual­s and seizure of RM2,184.

The remaining seven individual­s, he added, were nabbed by police during a raid on a cock-fighting pit at Kampung Lusut Jaya in Miri which saw the seizure of gambling parapherna­lia as well as several live and dead cockerels.

Those arrested are being investigat­ed for offences under the Common Gaming House Act 1953 and Prevention to Cruelty to Animals Ordinance 1962.
