‘No more discount schemes for parking offences from next year’

-

MIRI: Miri City Council ( MCC) will totally cease all of its discount schemes for parking offences starting next year.

Miri mayor Adam Yii said cessation of the discount schemes is in line with the directive from the Ministry of Local Government and Housing on June 28 this year.

“On March 29 last year, MCC introduced a discount scheme for those who managed to make early payment within 14 days starting from the date of the issuance of the parking compound.

“The intention of the council offering such discount scheme was to encourage the car owners to quickly settle their parking offences without any delay. Starting January 2 next year, there will be no more discount scheme on the parking offences and the amount of the compound will be at its original amount,” he stated to the media after chairing a full council meeting at MCC’s meeting room yesterday.

Yii was clarifying some misunderstandings that there was an increase in parking compound fee by MCC. For the transition period before reverting to the original amount of the parking compound, he said MCC had approved 50 per cent discount on all outstanding parking compounds until end of this year.

Thus, he urged members of the public to take the opportunity to settle their parking fees, particularly outstanding parking compounds, before end of this year.

“Otherwise, they have to pay the full amount because the amount of the parking fine will be back to normal effective January 2 next year,” he said.
