Engineers on technical visit to septic sludge treatment plant

MIRI: The Institutio­n of Engineers Malaysia ( IEM) branch here recently conducted a technical visit to the septic sludge treatment plant in Tudan, located some 10km from the city.

According to IEM Miri chairman Paul Chiew, the visit to the 18- acre forested site enabled members to understand the plant operation and gain knowledge on the downstream processes after collecting sludge from the residentia­l septic tanks.

The group of 30 participan­ts from various engineerin­g discipline­s were introduced to the plant’s structure with an overview of the treatment method.

treated sludge in solid form at Bekenu sanitary landfill.

“From the briefing, it is understood that the plant is designed to cater for the projected number of septic tanks and package wastewater treatment units in Miri city up to 2020.

“Based on the Sungai Miri Environmen­tal Management Study Report, the number of septic tanks is estimated to increase to 40,000 units by 2020,” Chiew said.

“It is also important to note that the plant serves to further digest the septic sludge and improve the efficiency of the wastewater treatment facilities in Miri.”

The tour wrapped up with a short question-answer session.

The participan­ts were awarded with four CPD/ PDP hours upon completion of the visit.
