Couple’s attacker under remand

MIRI: A man arrested for allegedly assaulting and injuring a husband and wife was ordered by the magistrate’s court yesterday to be remanded for three days to facilitate police investigat­ions.

The suspect, 43, from Desa Senadin here was ordered to be remanded at Miri Central Police Station lock-up in accordance with Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

According to investigat­ing officer, Inspector Nur Hasanah Jamil, the suspect was arrested at the roadside of Chia Tze Chin Road here around 11.35am on Tuesday ( Dec 19).

Police seized a spanner from the suspect as exhibit.

The arrest was made after a woman lodged a police report at Lutong Police Station on Dec 19.

In her report, the complainan­t, 40, said when she and her husband sent a friend to his home in Kampung Pulau Melayu at around 12.30pm on Dec18, the brother-in-law of that friend suddenly assaulted her husband (the complainan­t) with a spanner, which he used to hit him on the right calf.

The assailant injured her right hand when she tried to stop him attacking her husband.

Nur Hasanah in her applicatio­n said the four- day remand for the suspect was to enable police to conduct a detailed investigat­ion of the case, and as the police need time to record the suspect’s communicat­ion and witnesses, as well as obtain the medical report on the victims.

Magistrate Zuraini Ali Musa granted a three- day remand of the suspect until Dec 23.
