Villagers reminded to monitor water level

-

MIRI: Villagers in Long Wat and Long Bemang are reminded to monitor the water level following the flood at Long Atip in the interior of Baram.

Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau, when contacted, said the flood at Long Atip was due to heavy rain that occurred for the last couple of days, causing the water level in Sungai Apoh to rise and overflow to low-lying areas in the settlement.

“No evacuation of the people living in the 100- door longhouse although the water level rose to two feet high. The people, however, are reminded to monitor and be on the alert as the bad weather is reported to continue for the next couple of days,” Dennis pointed out.

He said both Long Wat and Long Bemang are prone to flood as they are located in low-lying areas and downstream of Apoh.

“The rising water from Long Atip may flow downstream and may cause flood in both Long Wat and Long Bemang,” said Dennis, who decided not to go on leave in order to monitor the situation in his constituency due to the prevailing bad weather.

At the same time, he urged relevant agencies particularly the District Office, Fire and Rescue Department including Welfare Department to be prepared for any eventuality.

“As it is school holiday, parents must monitor and keep track of their children’s activities and not let them swim or play in the water.

Keep important documents in higher places and be ready to evacuate if necessary,” he advised.
